What is Cataract?

A cataract is a cloudy area that develops on the eye’s clear lens, causing vision to become blurred, similar to looking through a foggy or frosted glass. People with cataracts may find it difficult to read, drive (especially at night), or recognize faces. While brighter lighting and prescription glasses can provide temporary relief, surgery may be necessary if cataracts begin to interfere with daily activities.

Identifying the Signs

visions
Cloudy, Blurred, or Dim Vision

Objects may appear blurry, hazy, or unclear, making it difficult to see details clearly, especially in bright light or at night.

night
Difficulty Seeing at Night

Night vision difficulty causes poor sight in low light, increased sensitivity to light, and reduced overall visibility.

sun
Increased Need for Bright Light

Reading and daily tasks become difficult, needing brighter lighting for clarity, as vision weakens in dim or low-light conditions, affecting ease.

halo
Seeing Halos Around Lights

Glare or halos around bright lights at night cause discomfort, making driving and low-light activities difficult.

sunglasses
Frequent Changes in Prescription

Frequent glasses or lens adjustments indicate changing vision, suggesting potential eye issues needing professional evaluation and care.

Types

Nuclear Cataract

Affect the center of the lens.Initially, they may cause increased nearsightedness or improved reading ability.Over time, the lens turns yellow or brown, impairing vision and color perception

Cortical Cataract

Affect the edges of the lens. Early signs include whitish, wedge-shaped opacities or streaks. These streaks gradually spread toward the center of the lens.

Congenital Cataract

Present at birth. May be hereditary or caused by prenatal factors such as infections or injuries.

Posterior subcapsular cataract

Form at the back of the lens as a small, opaque spot, affecting vision, causing glare, and increasing light sensitivity.

Causes

Age

As we age, the lens of the eye gradually becomes cloudy, leading to cataracts and blurry vision.

Smoking

Smoking increases the risk of cataracts by damaging the lens of the eye.

Health conditions

Diseases like diabetes, hypertension, and obesity elevate the risk of cataracts.

Previous eye surgery

Surgery for other eye conditions may increase the likelihood of developing cataracts

Vitamin C deficiency

Lack of vitamin C can contribute to the development of cataracts.

Sun exposure

Prolonged exposure to UV rays from the sun raises the risk of cataracts.
