The procedure can be conducted under local, regional, or general anesthesia, depending on the patient’s needs and the complexity of the examination. Cystoscopy provides a detailed view of the bladder lining and can also assist in performing biopsies or guiding specific treatments if necessary.

Bladder Control Issues

Difficulty urinating, improper urine retention, frequent urge to urinate, overactive bladder, and involuntary urine leakage

Types

Flexible Cystoscope

This type is bendable, enabling the provider to navigate the natural curves of the urethra gently and examine the bladder and urethra interior.

Rigid Cystoscope

Unlike the flexible version, this cystoscope is inflexible. It allows the provider to pass instruments through the tube for procedures such as biopsies or tumor removal. Typically, sedation or general anesthesia is used with this type.

Bladder infections

Poor Hygiene – Wiping from back to front can introduce bacteria into the urethra.
Holding Urine for Too Long – Allows bacteria to multiply.
Sexual Activity – Can push bacteria into the urinary tract.

Bladder stones

Incomplete Bladder Emptying – Due to conditions like an enlarged prostate (in men) or nerve damage.
Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs) – Can promote stone formation.
Bladder Catheters – Long-term catheter use increases risk.
Dehydration – Concentrated urine leads to mineral crystallization.
